  40.     The purpose of this file is to give you additional information
  41.     on Wing Commander: Secret Ops.  Should you have comments, see
  42.     the Product Support section located at the bottom of this
  43.     document.

  46. [2.0] About Wing Commander: Secret Ops

  48.     Wing Commander: Secret Ops is a continuation of the Wing
  49.     Commander saga and begins where Wing Commander: Prophecy
  50.     left off.  Every week, for a period of seven weeks, a new
  51.     set of missions, in the form of an episode, will be posted
  52.     on www.secretops.com. Downloading this file and installing
  53.     it will let you continue the game from where the previous
  54.     week left off.  An additional file providing speech and inflight
  55.     comms is also available for download in    order to enhance your
  56.     gaming experience.  For any questions on registration,
  57.     installation or the playing of the game, be sure to check out
  58.     the windows help file included as part of this original
  59.     SecretOps.exe download.

  105.     DirectX is a set of drivers designed to provide hardware 
  106.     compatibility to game companies under Windows 95.  At this
  107.     time, some hardware companies do not fully support DirectX 5.0.
  108.     If your hardware is not fully supported by DirectX, it is
  109.     likely the game    will not function.  Please check with your
  110.     computer or hardware manufacturer for information on DirectX
  111.     compatibility.

  115.     Wing Commander: Secret Ops requires Glide 2.43 to run
  116.     properly.  Glide is a set of drivers by 3Dfx Interactive,
  117.     designed to provide hardware compatibility between your 3Dfx
  118.     card and Wing Commander: Secret Ops. The following 3Dfx cards
  119.     have been tested with Wing Commander: Secret Ops:

  132.     Under DirectX, Microsoft provides game developers a standard
  133.     way of handling all video 3D chipsets.  This standard is known
  134.     as Direct 3D. Since Direct3D is in its infancy, video card
  135.     manufacturers release driver updates at regular intervals.

  137.     Due to the nature of Direct 3D, only a certain number of cards
  138.     are supported. Direct 3D support requires 4 megabytes of video
  139.     RAM.  The following chipsets are currently supported via
  140.     Direct 3D:

  149.     It is important to note that for the best and most reliable 
  150.     performance, the newest drivers for your particular video card
  151.     are required.  Contact your video card manufacturer for
  152.     information on obtaining the latest drivers.

  154.     Should you experience unusual video problems, it is likely
  155.     that your video card drivers need updating.

  158. [4.0] WC: Secret Ops FAQ
  159.     
  160.     Q:  How do I obtain a callsign and number key?
  161.     A:  Visit the Wing Commander: Secret Ops web page at
  162.         www.secretops.com to register your callsign.  On this
  163.         page is a register button that will take you to the
  164.         registration location when pressed.  Once you have
  165.         registered, you will be given a numeric key that
  166.         corresponds with your callsign.

  169.     Q:  I forgot my callsign and now can't get into the game.
  170.         How do I figure out what it was?
  171.     A:  Just open the Secret Ops directory on your hard drive
  172.             (C:\Games\Secret Ops\ in most cases) and then open the 
  173.             History directory therein.  Within this History directory 
  174.             will be a directory named after your registered callsign
  175.         (assuming you have played at least one mission since
  176.         registering your callsign).

  179.     Q:  What are the benefits to downloading the optional speech
  180.         file?
  181.     A:  Though the game can be played through completely without    
  182.         this file, it is provided to enhance your overall
  183.         gaming experience.  The download provides speech for the
  184.         mission briefings and speech for the inflight comms in the
  185.         missions.  
  186.                NOTE:  If you have installed the Full version of Secret Ops,
  187.            you already have the full speech file on your hard drive.
  188.         You need only download the speech file if you have downloaded
  189.         the    Basic installation size, though the game will play just 
  190.             fine without it.

  193.     Q:  What happens when I reach the end of an episode?
  194.     A:  Upon reaching the end of an episode, the game menu screen
  195.         will appear.  Clicking on Return to Game will bring up a
  196.         splash screen letting you know that you have successfully
  197.         completed this episode, giving you the name of the next
  198.         episode, and giving you a password which you can use when
  199.          logging on to www.secretops.com.

  202.     Q:  What does the password on the splash screen mean?
  203.     A:  The password can be used to log in to parts of the
  204.             Secret Ops website.  You will then have access to
  205.         information which reflects your performance within the
  206.         game.

  209.     Q:  How do I install a new episode?
  210.     A:  To install a new episode, download the latest episode from
  211.             www.secretops.com.  Double-click on the downloaded file
  212.         and click Yes when asked if you wish to to install the
  213.         episode.  In just a matter of seconds the new missions
  214.         will be installed.  The next time you start the game you
  215.         will then have access to the new missions.

  218.     Q:  Once I have installed a new episode how do I play the new 
  219.             missions?
  220.     A:  If the last mission you flew was the last mission in the
  221.         previous episode, then when you install the new episode the
  222.         game will automatically continue with the new missions.  
  223.             However, if you choose to refly any of the missions in an 
  224.             episode after reaching the end of that episode, you will have 
  225.             to refly the last mission of that episode before you can play
  226.             the new missions.

  229.     Q:  How often will new episodes be released?
  230.     A:  After the original game release, episodes will be posted
  231.         once a week every Thursday for a period of seven weeks.

  234.     Q:  My screen appears washed out.  How do I change the brightness 
  235.             level?
  236.     A:  In the Options menu for Secret Ops (ESC key) are two Gamma 
  237.             slider bars, one for the inflight comm videos and one for the 
  238.             rest of the game.  Adjust these two bars to obtain the desired
  239.             brightness level.

  242.     Q:  I'm having a hard time destroying certain capital ships engines.
  243.     A:  Sometimes, torpedoes will not inflict damage on the ship's
  244.             engines despite a direct hit.  Attack the engine from an angle
  245.             so that your torpedo does not hit the engine directly in the 
  246.             center, but rather a little to the outside of the circular 
  247.             engine.  If you run out of torps, simply restart the mission
  248.             (ESC key), or order your wingmen to attack the Leviathan by
  249.             targetting the ship and hitting ALT+A.
